Early Years (1902-1945)

Real Madrid returned home when football was introduced to Madrid by teachers and students of the Institución Libre Enseñanza, including several Oxbridge graduates. They founded Football Club Sky in 1897, playing on Sunday mornings at Moncloa. Story

Santiago Bernabéu is the home of Real Madrid and is definitely one of the world’s most famous soccer venues.

The stadium was inaugurated in December 1947 with a match between Real Madrid and the Portuguese club Os Belenseses. When first expanded in 1954, it became the largest stadium in the world at that time, with a capacity of 120,000. There have been several renovations since then, and current capacity is 80,400.

Originally called Estadio Chamartín after Madrid’s previous stadium, the name was changed on January 4, 1955 in honor of the club’s president, Santiago Bernabéu, whose vision and leadership commanded this magnificent project.

The stadium is located in the heart of the business district and even has its own Madrid Metro station along the 10 line, called "Santiago Bernabéu”.

There are daily tours of the stadium which include the locker rooms, the Presidential Box, the player’s tunnel, benches and coach’s area, the playing field, an amazing Trophies Exhibition and a brand new official Adidas Store. It is said to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain, second only to the Prado Museum in Madrid.
